The Monpa tribes are the major tribal community in this region. The Monpas are Buddhist and their religious believes and practices are centred round the Tawang Monastery. You can see prayer flags around Monasteries printed in Tibetan script “OM MANE PEME HUNG” which means “HAIL TO WHO IS BORN AS A JEWEL IN A LOTUS”. The Monpas believe that whichever direction flag flutters the atmosphere gets purified. The people of Monpa community are very artistic and their Thangka painting, carpets are must buy.

  Celebrating Monastic Festival Celebrating Monastic Festival   Every year in January three day long Torgya festival is celebrated at the Tawang Monastery. In this Monastic festival the monks performs dance called Chham wearing their traditional attire Cham-lang. This festival is celebrated to chase out the evil spirit and bring prosperity and happiness for people and crops. In February-march Losar festival is celebrated to commemorate the Tibetan New Year. The Monpa men wear Tibetan Chugba and the women wear red coloured gown called Shingka and perform Pantomime dances.

  • Tawang Monastery

The monastery is believed to be 400 years old and it houses a huge statue of Lord Buddha. Tawang Monastery gives you an opportunity to peep into the peaceful lives of Buddhist monks. You can now even enjoy a cable car ride from Tawang Monastery to Gyangyong Ani Gonpa.  
  • Shungatser or Madhuri Lake

  Madhuri Lake Madhuri Lake   In the heart of Himalaya Shungatser Lake is one of the must visit places. This Lake is the most beautiful and remotest lakes in India. If you are in Tawang don’t miss out this lake which is Just 30 km from town. The Lake was created as a result of an earthquake and the trunks of dead trees are seen in the midst of Lake even today.
