They contain the collective spirit of a nation and provide a glimpse of the future course of time. India saw many twists and turns of events in 2017. The significant episodes cover economics to politics, social issues to cultural issues, big achievements bringing laurels to the nation to losing a loved one.

ISRO launched 104 satellites in one go!
The year 2017 saw India setting a World Record when Indian Space Research Organisation(ISRO) launched 104 satellites into orbit in a single mission. The event took place in February 2017. After Russia launched 37 satellites in one go, India became the first country to create the history by launching 104 satellites in a single go!
Blow of Goods & Services Tax in 2017
The Goods and Services Tax was introduced in July 2017. It replaced the multiple taxes that were levied by the state and the central governments. The basic idea behind coming up with this tax was “one nation, one market, one tax”. It has been speculated that this fiscal reform will fill the loopholes and will improve the economy of India.
Presidential Elections – 2017
The elections were held in the month of July for the coveted position of the President of India. The two contestants were the former speaker of the Lok Sabha, Meira Kumar, and the Governor of Uttar Pradesh, Ram Nath Kovind out of which the latter was elected as the President of India on 20th of July, 2017. Despite the fact that the two are educated intellectuals of the country who were standing against each other for the respected post of the President, the media houses were keen on churning out news pertaining to their castes. Their real personalities were lost amidst their castes.
Nirmala Sitharaman is the second woman after Indira Gandhi to acquire the powerful position of Defence Minister in the Indian Ministry. In a patriarchal country that suffers from preconceived notions regarding the capability of a woman, Nirmala proved her sheer determination by making it to a respectable position of India.
FIFA Worldcup U-17 India 2017
After India was awarded the hosting rights in 2013, it organized the 17th FIFA U-17 World Cup. It was a historic event because it was the first time when India has hosted a FIFA tournament. England won the U-17 World Cup.
The Doklam standoff resulted in a strained relationship between India and China. China’s road construction activity in the Doklam plateau has been a cause of grave concern for India. While China remained stiff on its position, the Indian troops too were resolute to prevent China from performing construction activity. After much of the deliberation, the matter was resolved after a tense standoff for more than two months.
Murder Mystery of Gauri Lankesh
A critic of right-wing Hindutva politics, Gauri Lankesh was shot dead by unknown assailants outside her home in September. This sudden incident attracted a widespread hatred of the community of journalists. It brought the Right to Freedom of Expression under questions. She worked as an editor in Lankesh Patrike. Her sudden demise came as a shock for the entire nation.
Mirabai Chanu won Gold!
An Indian Railways employee, Mirabai Chanu, became the first Indian in over two decades to bag a gold medal at the World Weightlifting Championship in Anaheim, USA. She lifted 85kg in snatch and 109kg in clean and jerk to total an impressive 194kg in the women’s 48kg and had set a new national record.
India was crowned!
Manushi Chhillar brought glory to the nation by winning the title of Miss World 2017 in a grand event held in China. She is a 20-year-old young beauty from the city of Haryana whose phenomenal success had opened new avenues for other girls of the country.
Ban on Padmavati
The mob took to the streets of the different parts of the nation prior to the release of epic drama Padmavati. The movie is considered to be the magnum opus of Bhansali as he had spent a huge amount of money in its making. The Karni Sena of Rajasthan has major issues with Bhansali who has been accused of manipulating the history and distorting the truth.
Shashi Kapoor passed away.
The veteran actor, the superstar of Bollywood, Shashi Kapoor left for his heavenly abode in December 2017. He had received the prestigious Dada Saheb Phalke Award and the Padma Bhushan in 2011.
The year 2017 is inching close to an end. It is leaving behind uncountable and significant accomplishments and memories that we will treasure forever.
