The Folk music is back but in a new avatar. Be it Bollywood, Marriage functions or clubs the foot tapping Punjabi numbers are ruling the charts everywhere. During the 90’s when Punjab King “Daler Mehndi” came up with “balleballe”, “shavashava” or “burraaburraa”, the crowd couldn’t stop grooving. Even today, when the Punjabi folk songs have entered the mainstream cinema people play it on repeat. The sudden comeback of the popular albums is helping in preserving their roots. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LiaXzBHxhzE&list=PLFFyMei_d85VAQqqOkvaM-UR-6lbeMZr   Gurdas Maan performing Challa Punjabi Song There are various famous Punjabi folk songs sung by famous legends were earlier commonly heard in the lanes of Punjab. The predecessors learn music from their ancestors and try for its global reach. However, the melodies got restricted only to the locals and the few surrounded regions. Few stars who made it to the Bollywood received success in changing the fate of Punjabi music. Not only for singles or debut albums but even the Bollywood movies started welcoming the Punjabi music. The melody “Gur naalon ishq mithha” originally sung by Malkit Singh in 1986 created waves when the remixed version hit the Hindi music industry. The Indian weddings couldn’t be complete with these numbers; one of them was ‘Mera laung gawacha’ which was originally sung by Mohd Sadiq and Surinder Kaur years ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJXdBKuIFzM                                     Gud Naal Ishq Mitha remix https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1UCWrW0T_xQ                                              Best Pre-wedding Song   Coming to the era of rap and hip-hop, the rage of Punjabi hits are increasing all over. The introduction of Yo Yo Honey Singh’s song “ Angrezi Beat” in his album “International Villager” came out in 2011 was included in the feature film “Cocktail”. The song “Sadi Gali Bhul ke bhi” originally sung by Lehmber Hussainpuri in 2008 was crème de la crème of the movie “Tanu weds Manu”. The trend is continuing and Punjabi songs are getting well connected with the youths of the country. They are peppy and electrifying. Not the dancing numbers but also the slow and romantic melodies like “Main tenu samjhawan ki” has won many hearts which was revisited and sung by Arijit Singh. And there are much more! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6XGdeSKL6eE                   Samjhawan from Humpty Sharma ki Dulhaniyan https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w_HaezV0DqI                                  Sadi Gali from Tanu weds Manu   Isn’t it great to listen to those old melodies again, to groove in their tunes?  Punjabi songs will continue the crowd to dance as “If the music is good, you dance”.
