The Monpas are Buddhist and their religious believes and practices are centred round the Tawang Monastery. You can see prayer flags around Monasteries printed in Tibetan script “OM MANE PEME HUNG” which means “HAIL TO WHO IS BORN AS A JEWEL IN A LOTUS”. The Monpas believe that whichever direction flag flutters the atmosphere gets purified. The people of Monpa community are very artistic and their Thangka painting, carpets are must buy.

Every year in January three day long Torgya festival is celebrated at the Tawang Monastery. In this Monastic festival the monks performs dance called Chham wearing their traditional attire Cham-lang. This festival is celebrated to chase out the evil spirit and bring prosperity and happiness for people and crops. In February-march Losar festival is celebrated to commemorate the Tibetan New Year. The Monpa men wear Tibetan Chugba and the women wear red coloured gown called Shingka and perform Pantomime dances.
