Must-Have Ingredients in the Navratri Fast Diet

 

As the Sharad Navratri begins from 21st September and extends until 29th September, every family member is geared up in the celebration. Like every year, this year too people are observing Navratri fast and celebrate the homecoming of Devi Durga. Most of us want variety in the dishes during the fasting of these nine days, however, there are few ingredients which one should include in their diet so as to remain healthy and keep diseases away. The reason behind adding them to the diet is because of their high nutritional value and acting as detox agents to our body, thus helping in invoking the power of Shakti in our body.

Main Ingredients of Navratri Fast:

  • Buckwheat Flour (Kuttu ka Atta)
  • Amaranth Flour (Rajgire Ka Atta)
  • Barnyard Millet Flour (Sama Ke Chawal Ka Atta)
  • WaterChestnut Flour (Singhare Ka Atta)
  • Sabudana (Tapioca Pearls)
  • Makhane (Foxnuts/Lotus seeds)
  • Sendha Namak (Rock Salt)

 

The flours used are gluten-free and are recommended over the regular wheat flour all over the world. Using Rock Salt during Navratri fast is good for the blood pressure and helps in absorbing minerals and is better than common salt.

 

Enlisted few of the Navratri fast recipes which can be prepared from the above ingredients:

  • Samvat Rice Khichdi: If you are tired of Sabudana Khichdi or Kuttu ki khichdi then this Navratri you can relish Samvat Khichdi. Samvat (barnyard millet) is a type of millet, a healthy option which tastes good when prepared with potato. Add a dollop of ghee and serve it hot!

  • Sabudana Thalipeeth: Love pancakes? then one can prepare tasty pancakes with tapioca pearls mixed with potato, ground peanuts, and spices.

  • Aloo Poori: This dish is relishable not only on fasts but also can be a daily breakfast or tiffin option. However, the vrat waale aloo or potato curry is prepared without adding onions or garlic but can be made tasty by adding appropriate spices. The potato curry can be tasted with either regular whole wheat pooris/pooris made with Singhara (chestnut flour)/pooris made with kuttu (Buckwheat flour) ka atta.

  • Kofta: One can prepare koftas made with Cottage Cheese (Paneer) or Raw Bananas. The crisp koftas can be dipped into curries and can be relished with hot puffy pooris.

  • Dahi Arbi: If you are health conscious and doesn’t favour potato much in your diet then you can potatoes with colocasia-taro roots prepared in a thin yogurt gravy.

  • Kadhi: Most of us loves Kadhi-chawal which is basically prepared with gram flour (besan) however during Navratri fasting Amaranth flour is used in preparing the kadhi.

  • Uttapams: If you are from South India, you can prepare Uttapams with barnyard millet flour rather than the white rice flour during Navratri fasting.

  • Fruit Salad: None of the fruits are restricted during Navratri. One can grab a bowl of mixed fruits sprinkled with rock salt and chaat masala.

  • Makhane and Panner curry: A proteinaceous power-packed curry of lotus seeds and cottage cheese. This can be served with Kuttu ka paratha/pooris or with Sama ke chawal.

  • Halwa: If you have a sweet tooth then you can make kheer or halwa out of Sabudana, Makhana, Coconut or Singhara.
