6 Things that made us go “Whaaa?” in 2016!
To say 2016 was eventful would be putting it really, and I mean really, softly. Let’s look back at this dreadful year that many legends and rock stars couldn’t get through, but we somehow managed!
To start off with…
Nostalgia took over with the entry of Pokemon Go!
We all remember the craze of Pokemon back in the days. Some of us still have our Tazo collection to prove our undying loyalty. But even those who were never into Pokemon were taken over the craze this year with the launch of location based augmented reality game – Pokemon Go.
Wiki says it became become the fastest game to top the App Store and Google Play and the most downloaded app on the App Store of any app in their first week. Within two days of release, it was installed on more than 5% of Android devices in the United States and was downloaded more than 10 million times within a week of release, becoming the fastest such app to do so!
People walked around trying to catch Pokemon throughout the world! Us, Indians, joined in despite it not being officially released here.
While everybody was getting off their computers and stepping outside trying to catch Pokemon, an entire city was advised to stay at home…
Air Pollution in Delhi became an emergency!
After Diwali, the nation’s capital was enveloped in a thick smog due to pollution. It was ranked the worst around the world, beating even Beijing!
How bad could it really be? Well, the level of PM2.5 pollutants, crossed 900 in parts of the city. That is 16 times more than the safe limit which is 60. Delhi declared an emergency, shutting down schools, stopping construction and demolition, banning diesel generators and shutting down the Badarpur coal plant, for a couple of days.
As people were choking on this news, US dropped this bomb!
TRUMP?! WTF AMERICA?
What started off as a bad joke turned to reality in November when Donald Trump was elected as the president of the United States of America. Leading up to the election, he had made sexist and racist remarks, promised to build a wall to stop Mexican immigrants, threatened to ban Muslims and claimed that climate change was a myth. Outrageous? We think so too.
Here are some things that he has said in the past:
“I will build a great wall – and nobody builds walls better than me, believe me – and I’ll build them very inexpensively. I will build a great, great wall on our southern border, and I will make Mexico pay for that wall. Mark my words.”
“It’s freezing and snowing in New York – we need global warming!”
“If Ivanka weren’t my daughter, perhaps I’d be dating her.”
Yes, these sentences came out of his mouth and people still voted for him!
On the same day, India stole the thunder with its news…
Narendra Modi announces demonetisation!
This news evoked a variety of emotions in the common man.
First came disbelief – That can’t be possible.
Then came euphoria – Yes, screw them black money hoarders. Get them all. Go Modi!
This was followed by “mild inconvenience” – This is the line for the ATM? I’ve seen shorter ones on the day Kabaali released.
At present we’ve reached anger and frustration – I don’t care about black money and digital India no more. I just want enough money in my pocket to be able to buy a cup of coffee.
The government has notably changed the rules more than 50 times so far… and still counting!
We bid adieu to many notable people this year too!
The year of R.I.P messages!
Many notable people passed away in 2016. Politician Jayalalitha’s death brought Tamil Nadu to a standstill. Legendary dancer and choreographer Mrinalini Sarabhai, actress Carrie Fisher, and hockey player Mohammed Shahid too come to mind.
But the music industry was most affected with the death of legends like Prince, George Michael, David Bowie and Carnatic musician M. Balamuralikrishna.
But there’s more representation of Indians in Hollywood, so we have that going for us, which is nice.
Priyanka & Deepika make their foray into Hollywood!
While not as shocking as the rest of the news, it was quite surprising to see two popular mainstream bollywood actresses making their Hollywood debuts this year.
Priyanka surprised us with her role in the TV show – Quantico. It seemed like she was all over the place this year… at MTV music awards, the Oscars, on popular chat shows and in the trailer of the new Baywatch movie!
Then came the news of Deepika’s new movie – XXX: Return of Xander Cage with Vin Diesel. Looking smoking hot and sporting an Indian accent (woah), Deepika impressed us in her new trailer.
Other notable event that is cause for some celebration is the successful test of Agni-5. Agni-5 is India’s longest range nuclear capable missile developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation or DRDO. The intercontinental surface-to-surface ballistic missile, the latest in India’s “Agni” family of medium to intercontinental range missiles, with new technology for navigation and guidance, gives India the strategic depth it needs to contain its enemies, say scientists.
Did we miss any other surprising developments that happened this year? Tell us in the comments!
