By Saswati Borthakur

Diwali, as we all know, celebrates the return of Lord Rama to Ayodhya, after fouteen long years. People clean their houses and decorate them with lights. This festival welcomes Goddess Lakshmi into our homes. We declutter our spaces as it symbolises a fresh and auspicious beginning. Traditionally, Diwali was celebrated with Roshni (from earthen diyas) and Khushboo (from flowers and itr/perfume). With the passage of time, the markets got flooded with numerous decorative items like electric lights, colorful LED lights, perfumed candles, ready to use Rangoli patterns etc. This festival is all about meeting and celebrating with friends and family. With a little creativity, you can wow your guests with a beautifully decorated home. Here are a few tips to usher in festivity into your homes and hearts: d3   d2

LIVING ROOM:

  1. This is the most important space in your home, where you love to entertain guests. I like to keep an idol of Ganesha, who is worshipped before any auspicious undertaking, in a corner of the living room. Place a big earthern bowl of water, with fresh flowers and scented floating candles. This gives a pleasant aromatic vibe to the surroundings.
  1. Scented candles in mason jars/ wine glasses are also popular this season. You can place them either on the mantelpiece or on a side table.

  1. Nothing lifts up the mood of a living room like beautiful, bright, colorful cushions. The ones in silk and brocade look the best.

  1. You can also decorate a single wall with mirrors in different shapes, sizes and frames. They give an illusion of a bigger space and reflect a beautiful spectrum of light.
  1. Paper lamps in different colors, hung from the ceiling will also give a subtle glow to the surroundings.

DINING AREA.

  1. How can a festival be complete without sumptuous food? When you prepare all those delicacies, serving them in a beautifully laid out table will make all the difference.

Dining Table

  1. You can opt for copper serve ware. They are easily available in the market and they look very royal. Fresh flowers in a copper kettle, kept in the middle will look oh-so-pretty.

  1. For the dining table, you can rehash old brocade sarees into table runners and napkins.
  1. You may decorate old wine bottles and use them as candle holders.

OUTDOORS

  1. If you are one of the luckier ones to boast of a lawn or a similar outdoor area, bird cages are really big this season. You may decorate the cages with flowers and place a candle inside it and hang it or place them in corners.

  1. You may also hang earthern lanterns on a tree or in your balcony.
  1. The markets are flushed with innovative LED balloon lights. They are easy on the pocket and will give a whole new dimension to the outdoor space.
  1. You can use your creativity and make patterns on your flower pots with pipe lights.
  1. Another idea is to use flower garlands to decorate. They look very welcoming.
  1. If you have an artistic side, you may draw an artistic rangoli using natural colors and flower petals. Otherwise, readymade Rangoli patterns are also easily available.

BEDROOM

  1. Though a bedroom might rarely be used by your guests, you can hang soft lighted colourful lamps from the ceiling.
  1. Scented candles will give a romantic and surreal vibe to the room.
  1. Mirror work bed covers, duvets and cushions will not let the festivity go out of your bedroom.
So, this Diwali, welcome the deity and celebrate it with your loved ones. Make your home a delight to visit. But remember, no amount of decoration can surpass a genuine and welcoming smile. Happy Diwali.
